Choosing the Right Planter Size for Your Patio

Start with the mature size of the plant, not the nursery pot. Herbs and annuals do well in 10–14 inch containers, while shrubs prefer 16 inches and up.
Drainage matters
Confirm drainage holes and use a saucer only when you can empty standing water. For decks, choose lighter resin planters such as Bloem or Classic Home & Gardens styles.
Grouping containers
Odd-numbered groups at different heights look intentional. Keep a consistent finish so the grouping reads as one outdoor vignette.
